Dirty filters are the most common reason an aircon cools poorly, smells musty or leaks water. Cleaning them takes about five minutes and needs no tools.
Step by step
- Switch off the aircon with the remote, then at the isolator or plug.
- Lift the front panel of the indoor unit until it clicks or stays open.
- Slide the filters out — usually two mesh panels — by lifting them slightly and pulling down.
- Vacuum the dust off gently, from the dusty side.
- Wash in lukewarm water with a little mild dish soap. Don’t use hot water, a hard brush or strong chemicals.
- Dry completely in the shade. Never refit damp filters or dry them in direct sun.
- Refit the filters, close the panel and switch on. Reset the filter reminder if your unit has one.
How often
Every 2–4 weeks when you use the aircon daily, every week in very dusty conditions or with pets, and at least before summer and winter.
Can I run my aircon without filters?
No. Without filters, dust builds up on the coil inside, which reduces cooling, causes smells and leaks, and can only be removed with a professional clean.
What if the filters are torn or won’t come clean?
Replace them. Filters are model-specific — send us the indoor unit’s model number and we will find the right part.
If the coil behind the filter is visibly dirty or the unit still smells, book a professional service.
