Buying a midwall split aircon

A midwall split is the most popular air conditioner for South African homes and small offices. The indoor unit mounts high on the wall and connects through a small hole to an outdoor unit, so it is quiet inside and easy to service. Most units both cool in summer and heat in winter.

Choose the size by room area: roughly 9 000 BTU for a bedroom up to about 18 m², 12 000 BTU up to about 25 m², 18 000 BTU up to about 37 m² and 24 000 BTU for open-plan areas up to about 50 m². Is an inverter midwall split worth the extra cost?

Usually, yes. An inverter compressor slows down instead of switching on and off, so it holds the temperature more evenly, runs more quietly and typically uses noticeably less electricity than a fixed-speed unit. Fixed-speed units cost less upfront and suit rooms that are only cooled now and then.

Which refrigerant should I choose, R32 or R410A?
